Description [edit]

For anybody searching online for a bird of prey for sale, there are several interesting breeds that you can consider – one of which is the gyrfalcon.

Gyrfalcons are the largest members of the falcon family, and originate from the Arctic, but they also reside naturally in North America, Europe and Asia.

Learn more about gyrfalcons in the information guide below. Alternatively, if you want to browse birds of prey for sale on Bird Trader, click the link provided.

Birds of Prey In Profile: Gyrfalcons Guide

1. Gyrfalcons are extremely large, so in order to house these birds, you’ll need plenty of space. At maturity, males can reach a size of 61cm and a weight of over 1300kg, whilst females are actually far larger – around 65cm in length and with a wing span that can reach over 160cm.

2. These birds of prey are polymorphic in terms of colouring – this simply means colouring can vary greatly from individual to individual. Gyrfalcons can go from being all white to all dark – there is no standard colouring with birds from this particular breed.

3. Interesting, the gyrfalcon has a long associated history with humans, and has been used as a hunting and sports bird for several years. It is even the official bird of Canada’s Northwestern territories and was even considered an exotic ‘royal’ bird during Medieval times.

4. Enthusiasts considering this breed of falcon for sale should consider the costs involved – gyrfalcons can be amongst the most expensive of birds to keep. These birds can fly incredibly long distances, so falconers should look to fit a tracker to these birds as a sensible precaution.

5. Finally, there are a couple of health considerations that need to be taken into account for anybody thinking of keeping gyrfalcons. As with most falcon breeds, this species is extremely susceptible to avian influenza, so vaccinations are advisable. As gyrfalcons are rarely exposed to disease in their natural habitat, immune system problems can arise also.

Gyrfalcon and its relationship with humans [edit]

The Gyrfalcon is the official bird of Canada's Northwest Territories. The White falcon in the crest of the Icelandic Republic's coat of arms is a variety of this species.

In medieval times, the Gyrfalcon was considered the king's bird. Due to its rarity and the difficulties involved in obtaining it, in European falconry the gyrfalcon was generally reserved for kings and nobles. Very seldom was a man of lesser rank seen with a Gyrfalcon on his fist.

Gyrfalcons are very expensive to buy, and thus owners and breeders may keep them secret to avoid theft. They tend to fly long distances, and falconers may fit a radio-tracker to aid recovery.

Wild Gyrfalcons are not much exposed to disease, and as a result have weak immune systems. As a result, many gyrfalcons taken from the wild quickly die of disease. Several generations of captive breeding from the survivors causes selection for a stronger immune system and thus better resistance to disease.
