History

The Harris Hawk is a species of hawk that is native from the southern United States, all the way down to Chile and Argentina. As a results of escapes from captivity, populations of Harris Hawks have started in Western Europe, specifically, the UK. The Harris Hawk is a popular bird to use in falconry which is one of the reasons these populations have sprung up. %%AFC-ADVERT
Harris hawks can vary in size (46-76cm/18-30”) and the females are on average 40% larger than males. The average wingspan for a Harris Hawk is 1.1m (3ft 6in). Adult male Harris Hawks weigh roughly 700g and females weigh just over 1kg on average.

Harris hawks are predominantly dark brown, although they have a white tip on their tale and lighter brown streaks on their wings. Their cere and feet are a striking yellow colour. Juveniles have distinctive light streaks.

Harris Hawk Behaviour & Diet

The Harris Hawk is unique amongst birds as they hunt in ‘packs’ whereas most raptors hunt alone. The Harris Hawk’s prey generally consists of birds, lizards, mammals and large insects. Hunting in groups means they can take down much larger animals that most other birds of a similar size.

Harris Hawks live in quite a range of different habitats from semi-desert and light woodland to marshes and even mangrove swamps (in South America). Harris Hawks are also no migratory, choosing to stay in the same location all year round.

The nest of a Harris Hawk will consist of sticks, plant roots and stems lined with moss or leaves. The Female will build the nest for her young and a clutch of eggs is usually about 2-4 in number. The female does the incubation of the eggs and she will often have two males tending to the nest and her needs. A female Harris Hawk can breed two to three times a year and the young will stay the parents for up to three years, assisting with raising later offspring.

Keeping Harris Hawks

In the UK, Harris Hawks are one of the most popular birds to be used for falconry. They are very easy to train, are reliable, and are very social; all of which are good qualities.

Harris Hawks have quite a relaxed and friendly temperament, making them perfect for falconry.
